Nelissen Bricks has started the construction of a new production hall at its manufacturing site in Kesselt. The new hall will house a new automated tumbling installation. With this investment, Nelissen is responding to market demand while making the tumbling process more efficient and ergonomic.
Today, more than 20% of Nelissen bricks receive a finishing treatment such as tumbling. During this process, bricks rub against each other in a large drum, giving them a rustic, aged appearance. “This aesthetic is particularly popular in country-style and pastoral-style homes, as it combines the authentic look of reclaimed bricks with the technical performance of new bricks. Nelissen continues to believe in a sustainable future for brick and therefore keeps investing in a product range that meets market demand,” says Ronald Wijnants, Production Director.
More efficient and ergonomic
While the current process is still largely manual, the new, more automated installation will ensure a smoother and more efficient operation. This will result in less breakage and a higher processing capacity.
The new hall also represents a significant improvement for employees. The tumbling process will move from an outdoor to an indoor environment, designed with ergonomics in mind. In addition, the tumbling installation will be housed in a sound-insulated enclosure, reducing noise levels for both employees and the surrounding area.
A sustainable investment
As with previous investments, sustainability plays a key role in this project. “The new hall will be fully equipped with solar panels and will maximise the collection and reuse of rainwater. Part of this water will, for example, be reused in the tumbling process. These sustainability efforts form part of a broader strategy focused on electrification and the structural reduction of CO₂ emissions,” Ronald Wijnants adds.
Construction of the hall will start at the end of May 2026. Completion is scheduled for the end of 2026, after which the installation of the new tumbling line will follow.
