For Amsterdam Noord, Moke Architecten designed Kubus Katrijp, a residential development comprising 257 apartments spread across four building volumes surrounding a spacious courtyard. The architecture deliberately strengthens the connection with the existing neighbourhood, resulting in a contemporary building with a distinctive brick character.

According to architect Ludo Grooteman, the relationship with the surroundings formed the starting point of the design. "We wanted to create a building that would reconnect with the existing neighbourhood." The architects therefore opted for a predominantly brick-built architecture that respects the area's traditions while expressing a contemporary identity.

Brickwork as a connecting element

Brickwork plays a central role in the design. "The choice of brick was driven by both practical and architectural considerations. Brick fits seamlessly into the existing neighbourhood, requires little maintenance and offers the opportunity to create a rich and durable façade," says Ludo Grooteman.

To achieve sufficient variation and depth, Moke Architecten combined three brick blends: Rubio, Luce and Borlo. Warm yellow and ochre tones, complemented by lighter and darker shades, create a vibrant façade that changes continuously with the daylight.

Within this palette, the Rubio facing brick by Nelissen Bricks was used predominantly. This solid facing brick features a rough sanded texture with fine, irregular grooves. Its yellow base is enriched with subtle light pink shades, adding extra depth and character to the façade.

Attention to detail

The detailing further enhances the architecture. Different brick bonds create subtle variations across the façades, while bricks at the entrances were rotated to create a striking texture. "This makes the entrance areas more recognisable and gives the building a refined sense of scale," explains Ludo Grooteman.

With Kubus Katrijp, Moke Architecten demonstrates how carefully considered brick architecture not only creates a durable, low-maintenance building but also contributes to a warm, recognisable and vibrant living environment.
